SARAJEVO, April 2 (FENA) - According to projections of the World Bank, economic growth in BiH could be 3.4 percentage points this year.

Senior economist for BiH at the World Bank Sandra Hlivnjak stated in Sarajevo today that economic growth continued, which was assessed to three percentage points for BiH for 2018.

"When we look at the structure of that growth we still see that consumption is a dominant factor and what we would like to say is that it is necessary to launch reforms and it is necessary to transform this consumption in investments, to increase export and create workplaces in private sector," said Hlivnjak.

She emphasized that potential for further growth exists but alongside implementation of reforms, which need to be directed to increase of growth, employment and maintenance of macroeconomic stability. In that sense, according to projections of the World Bank, BiH can expect growth of 3.9 percentage points in medium-term period.

World Bank presented a regular economic report for the Western Balkans today, dedicated to recent economic movements in Albania, BiH, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia named "It is necessary to accelerate reforms“.

"Economic growth in the Western Balkans records accelerations from 2.6 percent in 2017 to 3.8 percent in 2018, whereas the projected average for 2019-2020 is 3.7 percent," said Edith Kikoni, senior economist at the World Bank.

According to her, these prospects are susceptible to growing foreign and domestic risks, including geopolitical and trade disputes.

"Only 96 000 workplaces were created in the Western Balkans in 2018, mostly in industry and services in comparison to 171.200 workplaces opened in 2017," said Kikoni.

She emphasized that the Western Balkan countries should focus on competitiveness, tax policy, diversification of financial sector, enhancement of export and economic connectivity in the upcoming period.
