MOSTAR, April 4 (FENA) - The annual analysis of the mine action of the BiH Armed Forces for 2018 was presented on Wednesday at the demining site “Corridor 5-C, Mostar South, Buna-4 and 5’, organized by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces of BiH.
The results achieved in the process of mine action in the past year were presented, and the attendees had the opportunity to see the use of drones in the new method of reconnaissance of mine-suspected areas, as well as the display of equipment used by demining units of the Armed Forces of BiH.
Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff for the Operations of the Armed Forces of BiH, Major General Ivica Jerkić said in a statement to the press that this activity is an opportunity for the Armed Forces to present their activities, reminding that demining is one of the five most important tasks defined by the BiH Defense Law.
“Two percent of BiH territory is still contaminated with landmines and a new demining strategy says that this job should be completed by 2025. For this to happen, we all have to work together,” said Jerkić.
The event was also attended by Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH, Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, who said that BiH is the country that still has the largest number of remnant landmines, but a lot is being done for the country to be completely cleared by 2025.
“At the beginning of this year, a new Strategy for the period 2018-2025 for demining was adopted by the state institutions and I am pleased that the European Union will, in turn, support the realization of these activities with 10 million euros," said Wigemark.
He pointed out that such activities primarily contribute to improving the safety of citizens, but simultaneously, it paves the way for future important infrastructure projects such as the construction on the Corridor 5-C.
