BiH Ombudspersons - Legal protection of journalists must be ensured

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 4 (FENA) - The Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nives Jukić, Prof. Dr. Ljubinko Mitrović and Dr. Jasminka Džumhur point to the importance of amending criminal legislation in order to ensure the legal protection of journalists, especially having in mind the important social function they perform.

Through their work, journalists update the issues and problems that a society faces, contribute to the opening of the debate, and create opportunities for all actors to express their views about what they are aware of the public, contributing to the level of democracy and building a society that tolerates and accepts other attitudes and beliefs, towards full equality of all individuals and groups.

On this occasion, the Ombudspersons have called for a consistent observance of the recommendations from the "Special Report on the situation and cases of threats to journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina", and in each case, attacks against journalists require an urgent reaction by the competent institutions and express their readiness to react in accordance with their mandate, stated the BiH Ombudsman Institution.
