SARAJEVO, May 24 (FENA) - Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Bosnia and Herzegovina Jakub Skalník and Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov presented today certificates to the heads and staffs of civil protection services of Maglaj, Livno and Mrkonjić Grad after two-day training in Sarajevo on the rescue and protection system.

Training included decision-making, operational procedures and organization of work of the system of protection and rescue at the local level, with the aim that the managements of local self-government units respond more effectively to potential disasters.

The training was organized within the project "Strengthening Resistance to Disasters in the Municipalities of Livno, Mrkonjić Grad and Magla”, funded by the Czech Republic, and implemented by UNDP in cooperation with local self-government units.

Ambassador Skalnik said that humanitarian assistance, including disaster prevention, is one of many ways in which the Czech Republic provides its assistance to BiH.

“We are ready to share our experiences gained in the Czech Republic with Bosnia and Herzegovina, in this case specifically with the municipalities of Livno, Mrkonjić Grad and Maglaj,” he said.

The Czech Republic is participating in this project with 100,000 euros, while the direct partners in the project, in addition to the three municipalities, are the Ministry of Security of BiH, the civil protection units of the Federation of BiH and RS.

The Czech Ambassador noted that they awarded diplomas to participants of the two-day training, and next month, the project will be completed after a year of training with a practical exercise in Mrkonjić Grad.

Deputy UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the training, and noted that recent floods also reminded that the municipalities are the first to respond to the direct consequences of floods and natural disasters.

“It is precisely in such extraordinary situations that the municipal mayors, city mayors and civil protection headquarters, face a challenge that implies an obligation to be the first to respond to the catastrophe, and to be quick as well,” said Khoshmukhamedov.

He added that the UNDP and the Czech Republic have recognized the importance, and also the need, of increasing knowledge, skills and awareness of the necessity of action in such situations.

Assistant to the Minister of Security of BiH for Protection and Rescue, Samir Agić assessed that this project aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities which is of exceptional importance.
