Džaferović: We need to start implementing the EC recommendations

SARAJEVO, May 29 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović said in Sarajevo today that, after the initial enthusiasm in February and the meeting in Brussels, he expected that, at this stage the EU would grant a candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but that did not happen due to the failure to establish power, but also it has to do with the elections for the European Parliament.

“They were realistic so they just described the current state of affairs in BiH, recommends the reforms that we need to implement, and they leave it to the EU member states to determine in the autumn their position on BiH,” said Džaferović.

He believes that this is an opportunity for BiH to work diligently on the recommended reforms, and not to lose the possibility of obtaining a candidate status by the end of the year.

Speaking about the claims of the BiH Presidency Chairman Milorad Dodik that “the government was not formed because of the Bosniaks”, Džaferović affirms that Dodik needs to analyze his behavior and attitude towards the BiH institutions.

“On the basis of objective criteria, Dodik should think about how much his behavior has contributed to this situation,” he pointed out.

He believes that the rhetoric of confrontation and a bad political atmosphere damages BiH, and that every politician should be careful what and how he speaks. Because of some politicians and individuals, Džaferović pointed out, we are in a situation in which the entire country suffers.

“There is no responsibility on the Bosniak side, as Dodik claims. The Bosniak side insists on the respect of the principles of the rule of law in BiH, repeatedly underlined in the European Commission's Opinion, which are the basis on which the EU functions,” he stressed.

He underlined that laws in BiH must be respected, as well as foreign policy commitments defined in the Foreign Policy Strategy, especially underlining BiH's membership in NATO.

“We cannot agree that the mandate of the Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers is awarded to someone who in advance tells us they will not respect the law. The legal system of Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a 'menu' so that anyone can take from it what they please and reject everything else, Džaferović said, pointing out that the rule of law must be fully respected.

He expressed hope that everyone in BiH would realize that they have to work diligently to implement the recommendation from the European Commission's Opinion on BiH membership in the EU.

He emphasized that these are the reforms that all citizens of BiH need, and that they will bring benefit to the people living in BiH.

“I am ready to work on all reforms as I have so far. But, I am placed in an ungrateful position, because I do everything so that BiH can move forward, and then I must justify the omissions of others who did not want to do their job. This should be very clear to the European administration,” said a member of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović.
