UNESCO cities exchange experiences in tourism management in Mostar

FENA

MOSTAR, July 19 (FENA) - In the framework of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the completion of the reconstruction of the Old Bridge, the City of Mostar, in cooperation with UNESCO, organized a conference entitled “Sustainable Tourism and Cultural Heritage”.

The lecturers at the Conference were UNESCO experts in the field of cultural heritage and tourism, and their practices in the field of tourism were presented by representatives of UNESCO cities from neighboring countries.

The conference was opened by UNESCO Director for Science and Culture in Europe Ana Luisa Thompson Flores and Mayor Ljubo Bešlić.

Talking about the reconstruction of the Old Bridge, head of the UNESCO Office in BiH, Siniša Šešum noted that it is an exceptionally significant event for the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Since the opening of the reconstructed Old Bridge, BiH has not had significant events related to culture and cultural heritage. We must continue to work on the promotion of values that Mostar has. This year is the 14th year of Mostar’s enrollment on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Old Bridge and the Old Town are enlisted as a universal symbol of reconciliation and coexistence,” said Šešum.

Director of UNESCO for Science and Culture in Europe Ana Luisa Thompson Flores talked about the development of tourism and problems it may face, saying that such problems occur around the world and that Mostar is not a specific environment.

She pointed out that the problems that may arise are not a reason to remove anyone from UNESCO's list of world heritage sites.

“The World Heritage Committee should develop culture and tourism in all cities and if they do not meet the standards required by the UNESCO Convention, the Committee will pay attention, but there will never be a threat that some UNESCO city will be delisted,” Flores said.
