Vučetić: Strongest tool for recognizing fake news is common sense

FENA

MOSTAR, August 16 (FENA) – The educational platform on the problem of disinformation and fake news, developed within the "#NeVjerujNaPrvu" - a project created by the Office of the Special Representative (EUSR) - was presented today in Mostar.

This project has the goal to point to the problem of disinformation and digital tools which are used for checking, verification and monitoring of the origins od media content, as well as the responsibility of individiuals in spreading such disinformation.

On this occasion, the brochure and applications were presented as tools for digital verification of information, lucrative content, which today, besides the media, is usually marketed by ordinary citizens.

Specifically, anyone can post the photo or information they want within an hour because the area is not regulated by law.

“Fake news is hard to spot and there are plenty of online tools to discover that news, but common sense is the most powerful tool for discovering them,” notes Vuk Vučetić of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of East Sarajevo.

According to him, the problem is that such content is taken over by the professional media, which widens the circle of misinformation.

“In addition, politicians, as a significant part of information through their social networks, are also able to disseminate such content, so the danger is multiple,” Vučetić adds.

The most common motives for spreading misinformation are political, commercial, or for gaining popularity.

Vučetic believes that citizens should be educated in this regard and that these types of education are very important to them.

“This does not mean that one should create paranoia from the media and not trust them, but one should be media-wise and question the contents,” he explains.
