Zvizdić: Strengthen cooperation between Visegrad Group and Western Balkans

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO / PRAGUE, September 12 (FENA) - Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers Denis Zvizdić attended a meeting of the Prime Ministers of the Visegrad Group and the Western Balkans in Prague today.

In addition to the Prime Ministers of the Visegrad Group, the meeting was attended by the Prime Ministers of Northern Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia, and hosted by the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš.

Zvizdić reiterated his stance that the European perspective of the Western Balkans has no alternative and that enlargement policy is common denominator and sole guarantor of ensuring stability, the rule of law and economic prosperity for BiH and the region of the Western Balkans, the BiH Council of Ministers stated.

In this regard, he expressed satisfaction that the proposed candidate for the position of the EU Enlargement Commissioner comes from a country that is a member of the Visegrad Group, which has always supported the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.

Zvizdić said that all the countries of the Visegrad Group and the Western Balkans should strive to strengthen political, economic, social and cultural cooperation in order to be a genuine support for each other in the European integration process.

“Only full integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union is in the continent's best interests. It is necessary to maintain the momentum of enlargement and a lasting commitment to implementing reforms aimed at taking over the acquis and reaching EU standards, while continuing to strengthen regional cooperation and good neighborly relations,” said Zvizdić.

He also spoke about basic prerequisites for overcoming problems in the Western Balkans and said that they are mainly political cooperation, a will for dialogue, strengthening the rule of law, stability and economic reforms.

“Further development of transport, energy and digital infrastructure, improving overall connectivity in the Western Balkans, as well as the Western Balkans with the European Union, is a key factor for development and employment, and will certainly bring direct benefit to regional economies and citizens. Continued cooperation and cohesion in the Western Balkan countries should be a priority for all governments, and cooperation and nurturing good mutual relations in the region should be the best way to build trust,” Zvizdić emphasized.

He recalled, in connection with migration crisis, a legal and humane attitude that BiH institutions have on this subject. He also stated a clear view that BiH will not be a gathering place for migrants in the Western Balkans, and that he expects EU assistance in dealing with illegal migrants in this regard.
