SARAJEVO, September 23 (FENA) - ''The experience of military imams in military peacekeeping missions - challenges and opportunities in modern times '' is the main topic of the 3rd international conference of military imams, which began today in Sarajevo.
Participants of the conference, which gathered more than 50 representatives from 14 countries in Sarajevo, discuss different models and aspects of religious life in the armed forces, with reference to the Islamic tradition in BiH, including the issue of respect for diversity, as well as the presence of Islam in the West.
According to Imam Asim Hafiz, an Islamic adviser to the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, Sarajevo conference is an opportunity for an exchange of views in the context of peace support missions and strengthening cooperation between people of different religions and worldviews.
He underlined the importance of opposing prejudices and stereotypes about Islam present in the world today.
"If we look at the world today, we see that people in the world see Islam as a religion that is against peace," Hafiz said, emphasizing that Islam is religion that loves peace, and Bosnian Muslims testify equality between Islamic, European and universal values.
Referring to the paradigm and experience of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he said that in religious terms, it is a pluralistic country where people of different religions live, and it definitely precedes compared to the rest of Europe.
The conference will also include signing of a statement / declaration against all kinds of extremism and exclusivity, and the Military Mufti, as imam service in the military with the longest tradition in Europe, will mark the anniversary of its establishment with a solemn ceremony, with the participation of numerous prominent figures.
