NEW YORK, September 25 (FENA) - The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić in his speech yesterday at the General Debate of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina is actively contributing to regional efforts to strengthening security in the region.

“In this regard, I would like to assure you that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a reliable, serious and determined partner of the United Nations, the European Union and NATO. We are especially determined in strengthening the European security area, we are firmly committed to the fight against organized crime, the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, illegal migration, as well as the security of national borders in terms of migration management,” said Komšić.

With regards to the international challenges of the modern age, he emphasized that BiH has a particular commitment to global efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina hereby expresses its concern about the continued escalation of violence in the world, especially in the Middle East, and I take this opportunity to call for an end to combat activities and for the solutions to be found peacefully. BiH has a principled view that the protection of civilians, respect for human rights and humanitarian law are a necessary priority in international relations,” said Komšić.

He also pointed out that the United Nations Sustainable Development Program and its transformative nature are seen as an opportunity and a lever for change in our country with the aim of comprehensively improving the social, economic and environmental aspects of the life of the population.

“We, therefore, hope that the Review of Activities for the Implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development will be finalized in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the end of 2019, to be submitted to the High-Level Political Forum to be held in the coming years. It is a great honor for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be a part of this transformation agenda as a sovereign country,” Komšić underlined.

Speaking about the EU and NATO integrations of the country, he emphasized that "we need all those reforms that require the elimination of existing systemic discrimination against BiH citizens".

“Unfortunately, these provisions are currently stipulated in the Constitution of BiH, but also in the provisions of various legal acts, where BiH will have to undergo a process of maturing in order to reach such a political level that such necessary reforms can be carried out without major socio-political strains,” stressed Komšić.

In addition to internal reforms, BiH also focuses on strengthening regional cooperation, especially when it comes to infrastructure projects in the communications, transport and energy sectors.

Internationally, Bosnia and Herzegovina is active within the United Nations, and with organizations such as the OSCE, the Council of Europe, CEFTA, as well as other various regional initiatives.

Our country had a prominent and active chairmanship of the SEECP and MARRI regional initiatives, where is invested plenty effort and gave an active impetus to a regional approach to facing current challenges.

“Bilateral relations between BiH and our neighboring countries are at the top of the foreign policy priorities, on the basis of which continuous improvement of cooperation should be made, on the basis of common interest and principles of equality, mutual respect, and respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We could thus conclude that Bosnia’s relations with neighboring countries are good and intense, however, because of the particular policies of our neighbors, we occasionally witness their activities to pursue their political interests within BiH, which causes unrest and produces certain level of destabilization in my country, which is not a good thing and it does not contribute to the development of the desired good neighborly relations,” emphasized Komšić.

In order to find an adequate solution to the many crises, Komšić said that BiH supports the efforts of the United Nations to strengthen the sector for preventive diplomacy within the political affairs department.

He considers it particularly important that all disputes be settled amicably, as stated in Article 33 of the Charter of the United Nations, expressly requiring the settlement of disputes by peaceful means and with good will to resolve them.

“When it comes to the sphere of trafficking in human beings, the Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Action Plan for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings in BiH for the period 2016-2019 focuses on improving the support system for combating trafficking in human beings in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will further modernize this plan and prepare a new one for the coming period,” said Komšić.

In addition, our country actively and directly contributes to the United Nations peacekeeping missions, one of the most visible components of the UN.

“As a sovereign country, which attaches particular importance to peacekeeping missions, Bosnia and Herzegovina has best demonstrated its participation and commitment to peacekeeping through its participation in United Nations and NATO peacekeeping missions. BiH welcomes the United Nations commitment to support the participation of women in peacekeeping missions and I am particularly pleased to point out that we are one of the few countries that has been fulfilling its goals for a quite a while in this respect – to have over 20 percent of women participating in peacekeeping missions,” Komšić reminded.

The BiH Presidency Chairman believes that in very complex political and geopolitical circumstances, next year we are welcoming the marking of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, an institution which has faced numerous challenges over the years."

That is why the UN General Assembly sessions have always been an opportunity to bring together the leaders of states to a common place to exchange views and ideas on the situation in the world, and in particular to try to find optimal solutions to contemporary global challenges and problems.

Komšić congratulated Nigeria's Ambassador to the UN, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, on his election as the next President of the General Assembly, and seized the opportunity to express his gratitude to Maria Fernanda Espinoza Garcia, the previous President of the UN General Assembly.

During his visit to New York, the BiH Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić will participate in a number of multilateral and bilateral meetings and hold meetings with world officials.
