Guterres: European Union and NATO should be open to BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 25 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Željko Komšić met today with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the BiH Presidency stated.

During the talks on the current political situation, Chairman Komšić said that Bosnia and Herzegovina is committed to good-neighborliness and friendly cooperation and to resolving all outstanding issues with neighboring countries. He pointed out as an example of our country's good relations with Montenegro, saying that these are the only two countries in the region that have no unresolved issues.

Chairman Komšić commented on the relationship of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Croatia saying that our country has understanding with its neighbors and is ready for a dialogue that would lead to resolving all outstanding issues. He said that he hopes to improve relations with the Republic of Serbia, given the upcoming meeting between the BiH Presidency and President Aleksandar Vučić.

As for the Republic of Croatia, he stressed that he expects to start a positive dialogue with the neighboring country after elections in that country at the end of the year. When it comes to unresolved issues with the Republic of Croatia, they are agreement on succession and border at sea, which Bosnia and Herzegovina is ready to resolve through dialogue and agreement.

Chairman Komšić referred to the statement of President Grabar-Kitarović, who, during the meeting with Gutteres, commented on the BiH Election Law and the fact that it was not amended. He said that the BiH Election Law needs to be changed in many segments, but that nevertheless it is solely internal issue of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will be decided only within Bosnia and Herzegovina.

UN Secretary-General Mr. Gutteres stated that relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and its neighbors should be resolved by agreement, and that environment should be created to overcome differences through positive dialogue. Gutteres also said that the European Union and NATO should be open to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

President Komšić also commented on the European Commission's Opinions, noting that he fully agrees with the recommendations set out in the Opinion and fully supports their implementation.

During the talks, Chairman Komšić also said that our country remains committed to the goals of the United Nations, and is ready to continue its participation and contribution to UN missions in the world.

He informed Secretary-General Guterres that Bosnia and Herzegovina is ready to participate in the UN's program “Dialogue for the Future”, but that a formal decision requires consent of all three members of the BiH Presidency.

Chairman Komšić congratulated the UN Secretary-General on the Mostar Peace Connection Award given to him by the Center for Peace and Multiethnic Cooperation from Mostar earlier this year.
