Unified stance of everyone in BiH regarding the nuclear waste disposal site

SARAJEVO, September 30 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, Denis Zvizdić, told reporters in Sarajevo today that they have done everything so far that was at disposal under the domestic legislation and domestic laws, international conventions, regarding the Republic of Croatia's intention to building a nuclear waste landfill at Trgovska Gora site, near the BiH border.

According to him, this is one of the issues where BiH has a unified position, complete consensus on the issue.

All of us, he pointed out, oppose the intention to dispose of nuclear waste next to the BiH border, "close to our natural and water resources and so close to populated areas."

“It is a distance of some 800 meters, which would endanger the health of a large number of people in our cities in the area. It is quite certain that, if we are ultimately put in this situation, we will use all the provisions of international conventions available to us and probably initiate an international or arbitration dispute in the event that the location of Trgovska gora is ultimately chosen,” Zvizdić said.

He reminded that for two years they have worked on this case and that there are conclusions of the Council of Ministers of BiH, a declaration, a resolution of the parliament, there is a joint commission headed by the RS Minister of Environment, which includes all levels of government, and then a permanent engagement of the competent agency, the state ministry of foreign trade and economic relations, the diplomatic and consular network, as well as the BiH Presidency's conclusions.

“All that is available to us, and we have used all the possibilities so far. We will see if Croatia and Slovenia decide on this location, but we will know as a state how to protect our interests,” Zvizdić said.

The media reported that representatives of the Republic of Croatia and Slovenia did not reach an agreement on a common location for the disposal of radioactive waste from the Krško nuclear power plant at today's meeting.

An MP in the House of Representatives of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and President of the ‘Green Club’ Saša Magazinović told reporters that this was an expected decision "because we have information that, while the election campaign is underway in the Republic of Croatia, this issue will be tried to be removed from the agenda."

“We have the information that the HDZ in the Sisak-Moslavina County, which covers this area, is in a panic and that they asked that this issue be set aside in every possible way during the campaign, so this was the expected outcome of the meeting,” said Magazinović.

He added that what BiH needs to do is form a legal team, "so that we do not have another situation resembling the one with the Pelješac Bridge when everything is over and then we decide to act.”
