Reliable data is foundation for social, political and economic decision-making

SARAJEVO, November 14 (FENA) – The second International Conference on Official Statistics - ICOS 2019, which began today at the School of Economics and Business in Sarajevo (EFSA), stressed that the use of only reliable data provided by official statistics enables adequate information needed to make quality decisions for both state bodies and managers in economy and citizens.

Emir Kremić, Director of the FBiH Statistics Institute, stated that the conference is organized in cooperation with EFSA, the RS Statistics Institute, the BiH Statistics Agency, as well as USAID and the World Bank, sponsored by the Government of the Federation of BiH.

"The aim of this conference is to bring together regional and international experts and to facilitate cooperation between statistical institutions as well as with the academic community to improve the harmonization of methodologies and research in statistics. Official statistics data are essential for making all social, political and economic decisions," said Kremić.

A two-day conference announced the participation of 200 scientists, experts and professors from BiH, the region and the world, and will discuss trends in statistical methodologies and data dissemination.

EFSA Dean Jasmina Selimović said that this is the second conference and that they are trying to make such events traditional, recognizing the importance of official statistics.

The FBiH Government is one of the sponsors of this conference and the Head of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH, Hasan Ganibegović, has congratulated the FBiH Statistics Agency, EFSA and other partners for organizing this conference.

He emphasized that the commitment of the FBiH Government is economic growth and development programs, for which the quality and reliable data play a very important role.

Chief of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in Sarajevo Nancy J. Eslick also highlighted the importance of credible data and databases that enable policy makers to make quality decisions, but also to make citizens demand government accountability.

Keynote speakers at ICOS 2019 are prominent statisticians – Edwin Diday, Emeritus Professor at the Paris Dauphine University of France, Ksenija Dumičić, Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Zagreb and Robert Stehrer, Scientific Director at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
