EU integration process needs to be made more interesting and closer to citizens

SARAJEVO, November 29 (FENA) - Benefits that the European information process brings are not so often presented in the media and it is difficult sometimes to make these topics attractive to an average reader, it was said today at an event organized by the Directorate for European Integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Although there is an internal consensus on the issue of European integration, and while it is known that there are numerous benefits to this process for the citizens themselves, it is often placed only in the context of political issues.

Multi-year monitoring of BiH conducted by the Directorate for European Integration during the six-month period has shown that European integration is a topic reported mainly from a political perspective.

Media reporting on EU integration in the context of everyday life are present, but are rare, with only a few media outlets in BiH having the content specifically dedicated to European integration.

Director of the Directorate for European Integration Edin Dilberović noted that the responsibility for providing information to citizens in the EU accession countries and the EU Member States rests solely with the governments of those countries, but the media also has an undeniable role in conveying information and seeking information important for the citizens.

“Numerous public surveys have shown that neither citizens in the aspiring Member States nor those living in the Member States have sufficient information on important aspects of integrated Europe and further EU enlargement. Communication in this respect is not conducted on a daily basis,” Dilberović added.

He also singled out the research on the support of the European integration process in BiH which has shown that citizens are mainly interested in things related to their everyday lives, the benefits that this process brings to them, and the possibilities of using financial assistance.

It was concluded that the media reporting needs to be made more attractive and interesting, and to talk about topics that genuinely concern citizens, such as the fact that the European Union has gone the farthest when it comes to consumer protection and similar topics.
