NATO integration offers new perspective on social and economic development

SARAJEVO, December 5 (FENA) - Integration into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) offers a new perspective on overall social and economic development, and member states' experiences testify many benefits, which, in addition to security and policy, entail a significant increase in foreign direct investment inflows, as well as positive reflections on overall economic and democratic development.

This was highlighted today in Sarajevo at a panel discussion "70 Years of NATO Alliance - Experiences of Hungary and Montenegro", organized by the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies of the University of Sarajevo and in partnership with the Embassies of Hungary and Montenegro in Bosnia and Herzegovina, NATO Headquarters Sarajevo and the Atlantic Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Commander of NATO headquarters in Sarajevo, Brigadier General Marti J. Bissell, greeted the participants and said that the panel is a good opportunity for BiH students to get reliable information about the benefits of NATO membership, as well as the process of joining the Alliance, including the benefits offered by this process to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Young people are the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, it is important that we give them good information on which they can make decisions so that they can stay here and build their own future in BiH and not go elsewhere,” said Bissell ahead of the event.

Bissell emphasized that NATO respects sovereignty of each state, and that relations with the North Atlantic Alliance is, in fact, the choice of each country, a potential aspirant for membership.

Hungarian Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Krisztian Posa, a country which is marking the 20th anniversary of NATO membership this year, reminded that the Hungarian Embassy in BiH is a contact embassy for NATO, and it is an opportunity to see the importance of NATO in the 21st century, referring, among other things, to the experiences of Hungary, which testify to the great investments made in that country.

“Today, after 20 years, no one in Hungary would even ask if it was worth joining the Alliance or not, because it is logical for everyone that we have only benefited from it,” said Ambassador Posa, pointing out numerous benefits of membership in the Alliance, such as NATO, which gathers the world's most developed and richest countries.

Ambassador of Montenegro Obrad Stanišić also pointed out advantages arising from NATO membership, stating that his country is the youngest member of NATO, and that all indications show that the decision to join that alliance was a right step, assessing this is the largest civilization step in the 1 000-year history of Montenegro.

He recalled that this was a step complementary to the European integration process, stressing that NATO does not represent only a military but also an economic and political alliance.

On behalf of the organizers, the participants were greeted by Jasmin Ahić professor at the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies of the University of Sarajevo stating that the debate is an opportunity to elaborate issues relevant to BiH’s Euro-Atlantic path and its continuity.

He also stated that the 70th anniversary of NATO coincides with the 70th anniversary of the University of Sarajevo.
