Somun: Unnecessary euphoria and fear of a new war in the Middle East

SARAJEVO, January 6 (FENA) - A journalist and diplomat Hajrudin Somun believes that 'US-Iran relations, tensions and the current situation are the results of not having diplomatic relations for 40 years, which has now culminated in the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad, but at least for the past three days, it has not grown into a full-blown war '.

“Although we are witnessing a series of threats from both Washington and Tehran, a conventional war will not break out in the coming days or months, but will continue with the highest-intensity of psychological warfare, with incidents such as the assassination of General Soleimani or the actions of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Special Forces against US embassies and bases in the Middle East and beyond,” said Somun.

He is of the opinion that 'President Trump needs tensions in the country and in the world to win votes for a second term, but not to open new focal points for conflict '.

“He promised his voters that the American soldiers would not be killed around the world, and several times he announced the withdrawal of existing troops from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Iran also does not care about further escalation or conflict with the US, as its military power and economy are weakened by US sanctions, such as the world has not yet experienced. That is why I believe that this is unnecessary euphoria and fear of a new war in the Middle East, triggered by the assassination of General Solomani,” he said.

Hajrudin Somun (1937), Bosnian national, a retired ambassador, spent half his working life in journalism, half in diplomacy. He was a reporter from the Middle East, a Tanjug News Agency correspondent from Iran, a Yugoslav diplomat in Baghdad and Iran, and Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Turkey and Malaysia.
