Ahić: Programs for resocialization of returning foreign fighters are successful

SARAJEVO, January 26 (FENA) - Jasmin Ahić, professor at the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies of the University of Sarajevo, said that, from a professional point of view, the program of deradicalization and resocialization of returnees from foreign fronts is primarily addressed by institutions in both penal and post penal treatment.

These, he added, are primarily institutional mechanisms within the prison itself and after serving time outside the prison.

He points out that this aspect is not sufficient only in terms of what society provides through its state mechanisms. In any case, the academic community, that is, certain programs that work on deradicalisation itself are to help as well.

“What we could conclude is that the very results of this repentance, which these people, the convicts have had, according to the results of their work over the past three years, can be compared with the fact that none of them has so far committed any serious offense or crime, let alone an act of recidivism, that is, an attempt to return to these foreign fronts. Therefore, from a professional point of view, even though it is very sensitive, especially for these groups now returning from the Syrian and Iraq's prisons through international legal assistance and agreement with our country, it is explicit but not too demanding in terms of enforcement with what we have institutionally and socially, and what we could possibly expect,” said Ahić.

He added that these results of work in penal and post-penal institutions "actually give us the right to say that these programs, which are carried out within the prisons and after serving their sentence, also have an effect".

Ahić said that there is a specific project implemented by the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies of the University of Sarajevo in collaboration with partners from law enforcement agencies, and is entitled "Defining Factors and Processes that lead to Radicalization, Extremism and Terrorism in BiH - DeFRET ".

He explains that it is a project of initiation, that is, of inferring factors that can lead to radicalization within a particular population and what leads to violent extremism and terrorism.
