SARAJEVO, January 30 (FENA) - Mine Action Strategy 2019-2025 requires KM 336 million for the implementation of tasks planned in order to clear Bosnia and Herzegovina of mines by 2025, it was highlighted at a meeting today in Sarajevo that gathered relevant representatives of BiH and international organizations involved in the mine clearance process.

Key aspects of the BiH mine clearance process are the focus of the presentation, organized in the BiH capital, which presents the preliminary results of the project 'General assessment of mine suspected areas in BiH' and the conclusions of the workshop on 'Definitions of productivity indicators and required resources for implementation of Land Release Methods ", and the development of a Mid-Term Land Release Action Plan.

According to Saša Obradović, Director of the BiH Mine Action Center (BHMAC), during the meeting, three demining options will be presented at the final meeting to keep Bosnia and Herzegovina mine-free by 2025.

“The project, funded by the European Commission in BiH, with three partners - BHMAC, AFBiH and Norwegian People's Aid - has produced good results in locating mine suspected areas,” said Obradović, pointing out that it is an opportunity to elaborate on how much time and resources are necessary to complete the demining process in BiH.

He recalled that the project was monitored by EUFOR as a monitoring organization, underlining the need for involvement of all levels of government in BiH in order to achieve a shift in the implementation of the set goals.

Responding to press inquiries, Obradović said that in Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the analysis, which included 128 municipalities and cities, the most endangered areas are the Una-Sana Canton and the Doboj and Maglaj areas.

Commenting on the situation in the Sarajevo Canton and East Sarajevo, he said that the project is being implemented in cooperation with the US Government, and that the focus is on the municipalities - Vogošća and East Ilidža.

Director of the Norwegian People's Aid in BiH, Jonas Zachrisson, said for FENA that the gathering in the BiH capital is an opportunity to analyze and apply the methodology of 'land reclamation in BiH' and to develop recommendations for BiH competent institutions on how to act to secure the resources necessary for an efficient process mine action, including the development of a medium-term plan.

He added that the assessments in that area are in the function of a more effective response to the risks posed by mine suspected areas and more effective organization, including proper engagement of BiH government bodies and demining organizations.

According to the participants of the meeting, the aim of the mentioned project is to create a clearer picture of the remaining suspected areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which analyzes the existing data and updates them, all in order to better plan mine action projects.
