RS positions stay unchanged on BiH Independence Day

SARAJEVO, February 26 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina will mark its 28th anniversary of independence on Sunday, but that date is still not recognized as a national holiday because the Republika Srpska entity categorically refuses to recognize March 1 as Independence Day.

The issue was again problematized in Sarajevo today when journalists asked when BiH will get a law on public holidays, and Republika Srpska representatives reiterated their position, saying it was the matter for the BiH Council of Ministers.

The issue was referred to the BiH Council of Ministers by the Serb Democratic Party (SDS) MP in the House of Representatives of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, Dragan Mektić, saying that the Council of Ministers should start working since the new convocation was appointed more than two months ago, and they have held only three sessions.

“It all depends on the Council of Ministers and line ministries, which should propose such law that everyone would agree on in order not to make problems for ourselves when it comes to non-working days and challenging the rights of one of the three peoples,” explained Mektić.

MP Nenad Stevandić points out that law on holidays can be discussed only when January 9 is accepted as a holiday, which was proclaimed in the RS as the entity's day, and has been challenged by the BiH Constitutional Court.

“When January 9th is recognized, and we find ways to acknowledge March 1. Without that, BiH will not get law on holidays,” Stevandić was determined in a response to a journalist's question.

Our Party MP Mirjana Marinković-Lepić points out that this conditioning of Stevandić is not right because the condition for accepting an unconstitutional holiday is set, which is why she believes that there will be no state law in the near future, although she says "it is really a shame".

On January 25, 1992, the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of BiH adopted the Decision to call a referendum on the sovereignty and independence of BiH. The referendum was held on February 29 and March 1, 1992 and 63 percent of citizens voted at the referendum, almost 100 percent of whom declared that they wanted a sovereign and independent BiH. Since then, March 1 has been celebrated as BiH Independence Day.
