SARAJEVO, March 4 (FENA) - A two-day workshop on the topic "Sustainable Development Goals for Road Transport and Road Safety" began today in Sarajevo.

The workshop was co-organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in BiH and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It is one of the activities in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH and UNDP, as well as an introduction to the beginning of activities of the Ministry of Communications and Transport of BiH on the development of the Framework Strategy for Road Safety in BiH and the Action Plan for 2021-2025 in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the organizers, the aim of the workshop is to strengthen the competent institutions in BiH regarding the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as to improve the current state of road traffic safety in BiH. The participants will exchange information and experiences with international and regional experts regarding the collection of information to meet these objectives, as well as the establishment of the Framework Strategy for Road Safety in BiH.

Minister of Communications and Transport of Bosnia and Herzegovina Vojin Mitrović emphasized that gathering of representatives of competent authorities of all levels and international and domestic experts in the field of traffic safety is an introduction to the beginning of the Ministry's activities in the preparation of the Framework Strategy for Road Safety in BiH and the Action Plan for the period from 2021 to 2025 in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.

Director of the Republika Srpska Agency for Traffic Safety Novica Krunić said that the goals of the action are to reduce the number of road casualties by half by 2025. He stated that 118 people were killed on the roads of Republika Srpska last year, less than in the previous period, and the number of registered vehicles was 420,000.

UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Steliana Nedera also addressed at the workshop and warned that action is needed regarding traffic safety on BiH roads, since, as a matter of fact, around 300 people are killed annually in road accidents in BiH.

Nedera stressed that the goal is to prevent road accidents and strengthen road safety, improve community safety and reduce the significant social and economic burden caused by road accidents.

She expressed hope that money will be provided this year to support not only strategy development but also implementation with other UN agencies.
