Košarac: Meat exports to Turkey under increased inspection controls

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 9 (FENA) - At the request of BiH's Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Minister Staša Košarac, a meeting was held today in Sarajevo with representatives of 'Tareks', a company operating within the Agricultural Credit Cooperatives of Turkey, and company 'Šišović', which is certified for meat purchase and slaughtering.

The topic of the meeting, which was attended by Director of the BiH Veterinary Office Ljubomir Kalaba, was to eliminate irregularities observed during the export of beef meat to Turkey after the BiH Veterinary Office issued an instruction to ban signing of veterinary certificates due to irregularities in export.

Košarac stressed that, from the aspect of primary goals of respecting BiH's international treaties and obligations and opening up new markets, it is of utmost importance that meat exports to Turkey continue and be promoted, and that meat exports to Turkey will continue under enhanced inspections by the BiH Veterinary Office, in accordance with the amended guidance on the signing of veterinary certificates.

"We talked about eliminating irregularities we inherited after taking office. The company 'Tareks', which, had a privileged position by Turkey when exporting meat, only bought meat from one slaughterhouse. We demand that the number of subcontractors be increased. At today's meeting it was agreed that this cooperation should be extended to at least two more slaughterhouse companies certified by Turkey," Košarac said.

In doing so, it will be insisted that the slaughterhouses must buy products from domestic producers.

It was also announced that the Veterinary Office of BiH will supervise all slaughterhouse capacities, and their aim is to conclude contracts with domestic producers, the BiH Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations announced.
