NATO membership ensures overall social and economic development

FENA

LIVNO, March 9 (FENA) - A panel discussion was held on Monday at the Livno City Administration building on  "Experiences of Hungary and Slovakia in NATO", organized by the Hungarian and Slovakian Embassies in BiH, in cooperation with the City of Livno.

The Mayor of Livno, Luka Čelan, stressed that the talks on the North Atlantic Treaty have often emphasized that integration offers every new member a new perspective on overall social and economic development.

“The experiences of the current members testify to numerous advantages, and besides security and political ones, these advantages very often imply a significant increase in FDI inflow and therefore a positive shift in the overall economic development. Bosnia and Herzegovina needs, first and foremost, long-term peace and stability, which then results in economic progress,” said the Mayor of Livno.

One of the participants in the panel discussion was Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH and Deputy Chairperson of the BiH Defense and Security Commission Borjana Krišto, who emphasized that the EU and NATO are BiH's foreign policy priorities, but that, unlike the EU political consensus, there are differences of opinion over NATO membership.

“Stable economic situation contributes to social security, reduces social tensions and makes society more organized, and NATO membership is certainly a positive signal for foreign investors,” said Krišto.

Hungarian Ambassador Krisztian Posa and Slovak Ambassador Martin Kačo talked about the experience of Hungary and Slovakia in the NATO alliance.

Ambassador Posa said the Hungarian Embassy in BiH is currently the contact embassy for NATO.

“The experiences of our country are positive. Today in Hungary no one asks if it was worth joining NATO. It is clear to everyone that we only had profit from this,” Posa said.

Talking about the benefits of NATO membership, Slovak Ambassador Kačo said that in any case it is better to make decisions together with great ones than to be outside and wait for someone to decide.

Croatian Ambassador to BiH Ivan Sabolić, Consul of the Republic of Croatia in Livno Tomislav Vrdoljak and Prime Minister of the Canton 10 Ivan Jozić also attended the panel discussion.
