Košarac: BiH economy is already suffering consequences of coronavirus pandemic

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 13 (FENA) - BiH Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, Staša Košarac, warned that a global problem, caused by the spread of coronavirus, has escalated in the region and that the BiH economy is already suffering certain consequences of the pandemic of the virus.

Košarac recalled that the decision of the authorities in Croatia to ban the entry of persons in the territory of this country, who had been in Italy in the previous days, made it impossible to transport goods from Italy to BiH and vice versa.

As Italy is the second most important foreign trade partner of BiH, Minister Košarac pointed out that the decision of the authorities in Croatia significantly endangers business of the domestic economy and creates additional costs for BiH export companies.

“We have been informed that as of March 10, Croatia is applying the provisions stipulating that all persons arriving in this country from 'red zones' are subject to inspection by sanitary inspectors at border crossings, and that for those persons found to exist the need for medical surveillance, will make decisions on mandatory quarantine for 14 days for all foreign nationals,” emphasized Košarac.

He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH is in constant contact with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH, representatives of the Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH, and chambers of commerce from the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH, as well as with the Embassy of BiH in Croatia, in order to act in coordination and institutional response to this new problem.

He announced that he would organize a joint meeting with representatives of the BiH Foreign Trade Chamber and the chambers of commerce of the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH on Monday, March 16, to discuss the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the BiH economy and the steps that will mean protecting the domestic economy, announced the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH.
