Guidelines for media in times of crisis

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 17 (FENA) - The Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Journalists Association of BiH, the Press Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of a large number of journalists and the media, have adopted guidelines for reporting in times of crisis.

They invite all journalists, as well as media outlets, to follow the guidelines of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) regarding the credibility of information sources, the security of journalists and journalists in crisis, and to submit their reports based on accurate, reliable and objective information from official sources.

Also, to share with citizens the recommendations and advice of competent and professional persons and institutions, which will enable them to be informed in a timely manner and implement measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in BiH.

All journalists and the media should jointly share the knowledge and information at their disposal and coordinate fieldwork with one another. In this way, it will contribute to comprehensive information for citizens while protecting fellow journalists and other media professionals (photojournalists, cameramen, drivers, etc.) from the risk of spreading coronavirus.

They need to minimize the arrival of guests to television and radio stations, and replace interviews and official statements with the use of online tools and techniques to report on coronavirus.

In addition to the Crisis Staff reports, medical institutions, official authorities should provide citizens with access to information related to psychological, social and educational support and services to help overcome the feeling of helplessness and anxiety associated with a longer stay at home and other enclosed spaces.

Also, to require from the state and public institutions and bodies of the Federation of BiH, as well as all cantons individually, suspending all press conferences and other public meetings with a larger number of journalists and media, thereby accepting their part of commitment to isolation and acting through online communication channels and IT platforms.

They should require that employers in media outlets put the health and safety of journalists, photojournalists, cameramen and other media personnel first, and consistently apply the principles of prevention and health protection of media professionals in the workplace. Such an approach must include shift plans (in editorial offices) and on-duty journalists and teams to do the job online - from home.

All the leading media outlets in Bosnia and Herzegovina supported this initiative, the Journalists Association of BiH stated.
