SARAJEVO, March 17 (FENA) - The BiH Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Staša Košarac said after an extraordinary session of the BiH Council of Ministers that domestic meat production capacities are being taken into account at this time, given the fact that it is not possible to estimate how much the situation caused by the coronavirus epidemic would last.
"Our concern is that we want to enable significant meat product capacities for the internal consumption in BiH, because we cannot make precise estimates at the moment. We also want to respect the international treaties we have with Turkey, so we will make assessments at the level of competent institutions and take into account that balance for internal consumption and for the activities of our business community, particularly in this case of chicken meat exports to Turkey," said Košarac.
He pointed out that "only one slaughterhouse in BiH prepares the meat for export to Turkey, with a total of 11 certified slaughterhouses".
"My position, supported by the entity ministers, is to give those slaughterers who want to do business with Tarex company from Turkey the registers of the competent ministries in the RS and the FBiH that clearly show who the farmers are, and we will insist that those slaughterhouses exclusively buy domestic meat based on the data provided by official institutions in the RS and the FBiH. If anyone breaks the rules they will not be protected," said Košarac.
On this occasion, he commented on the situation regarding coronavirus pandemic, where he considers it essential "to take care of the health of every person but also to ensure a smooth operation of domestic companies in the sector of foreign trade".
