FPI presents analysis of WB6 foreign policies alignment with EU foreign policy

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 27 (FENA) - Six Western Balkan countries state EU membership very clearly in their foreign policy priorities, thus the obligation of harmonization does not seem particularly demanding with established national interests, said Nedžma Džananović Miraščija, author of the document "Western Balkan countries' foreign policies - Harmonization with the EU Foreign Policy".

She says it is quite logical to continue to build diplomatic and bureaucratic capacities, as this is a significant precondition for participation in the rights and obligations that membership entails.

Through these conditions, the European Union tests the political and symbolic commitment of states, their harmonization and joint action, but also their willingness to continually invest in the development of concrete diplomatic and bureaucratic capacities to deal with the wider international context.

The main objective of the analysis, presented online by the BiH Foreign Policy Initiative in cooperation with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, was to determine whether, to what extent and in what way, the Western Balkan countries fulfill this part of the political criteria, and to identify the factors and actors influencing the greater or lesser degree of compliance.

Consistency with EU foreign policy in specific international circumstances is at the same time a clear indicator of the true validity of the declaratory foreign policy priorities of the countries, but also of the scope of the EU's transformative and structural foreign policy power in this area, especially in relation to other actors present in the region in different capacities.

Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH, Khaldoun Sinno said the European Union treats the region differently than other countries because they see them as future members of the European Union.

"However, we have expectations along that path. The EU must see a motivation for leaders to deliver on their promises! The European Union is here to help, no doubt about that," Sinno concluded.
