Srebrenica Memorial Center publishes a first of its kind, Genocide Denial Report

FENA Press release

SREBRENICA, May 10 (FENA) - The Srebrenica Memorial Center presented the Report on the Denial of Genocide in Srebrenica, which is the result of research into the activities of denying, minimizing and relativizing the crime of genocide by institutions and individuals in the country and the world.

Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić, said that the fight against genocide denial was more important than ever.

"The time has come for the Memorial Center to take a leading role on that path. Although the institution has existed since 2001, the Memorial Center was necessarily preoccupied with the grim responsibility for burying the killed and identified victims of genocide. But now we are opening an important new chapter in the development of this institution, striving to position ourselves as leaders in the work of raising awareness and education about genocide around the world. This report is the first step on that path," said Suljagić.

He expressed his gratitude to Monica Green, the leading researcher and author of the publication, and the team of people who made an immeasurable contribution to its realization, Hasan Hasanović, Nedim Jahić, Hikmet Karčić, Hariz Halilović, Admir Mulaosmanović, Mirnes Sokolović, Amra Begić Fazlić and Šefika Đozić.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center's report is published in Bosnian and English and includes research into the context of the BiH war, ethnic cleansing policies and war crimes in eastern Bosnia that preceded the Srebrenica genocide, the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice and the Court of BiH.

It also analyzes the activities of official institutions and individuals in BiH and Serbia to cover up the crime of genocide and investigates in detail the nationalist narratives concerning the denial of genocide, the number of victims and other messages dominant in the public sphere.

The report also includes several case studies, reviews of the contents of several publications that directly deny genocide, and provides information on international players who actively participated in the genocide denial campaign, the Srebrenica Memorial Center stated.

"Anyone who decides to read this report in good faith will find quality data and information based on facts and truth. Taking into account the exceptional sensitivity of the matter covered by the report, we are proud of the fact that not a single line of this publication is directed against the Serb people as a whole, but always and exclusively against individuals and institutions of the system behind genocide and its denial," said Suljagić.

He points out that the Srebrenica Memorial Center, in the way it communicates, has set a model of how facts, a scientific approach and a high academic standard of research can speak of the Srebrenica genocide, without allowing emotions and 'nationalist narratives' to affect what this institution has to say about genocide, perpetrators, deniers and responsible institutions.

This report is the first of its kind, and the Memorial Center is already working on developing a project that will enable the monitoring of genocide denial and reporting to the public to become a permanent and regular activity of the institution.

The report will be submitted to domestic and international institutions, and especially to partners in the academic community, it is said in a statement from the Srebrenica Memorial Center.
