Kavazović and Kožemjakin: Together we remember Holocaust and Srebrenica genocide

FENA Press release

SREBRENICA, May 12 (FENA) - The Srebrenica Memorial Center has launched a "Reading for Srebrenica" video project that will include more than 130 participants from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and among the first to support the project are Raisu-l-ulama Husein ef. Kavazović and Hazzan of the Sarajevo Synagogue Igor Kožemjakin.

Through the "Reading for Srebrenica" project, participants read a list of the names of 8.372 victims of the Srebrenica genocide, who are inscribed on the Memorial Wall in Potočari. The Srebrenica Memorial Center stated that the idea for this project was created based on a similar project that was launched and realized online this year on the occasion of memory of the victims of the Holocaust by Yad Vashem - The World Holocaust Remembrance Center.

Raisu-l-ulama Husein ef. Kavazović and Hazzan of the Sarajevo Synagogue Igor Kožemjakin sent a clear message on the joint fight against Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, but also against the denial of genocide in Srebrenica and the Holocaust in the country, region and world.

“The new circumstances caused by the state of emergency will require inventing new methods to preserve the memory of the victims of genocide. That is why I would like to congratulate the Memorial Center on this initiative and for allowing me to be the first one to read the names of the first victims from the list. It is important to remember every year that these are not just numbers. Each of these names obliges us all because those killed in the genocide in Srebrenica are not victims that only Muslims should mourn,” said Raisu-l-ulama Husein ef. Kavazović.

It is, as he added, a tragedy of all mankind, because genocide, as well as the Holocaust, are crimes against humanity, against man.

Hazzan of the Sarajevo Synagogue, Igor Kožemjakin, said that he gladly responded to the "Reading for Srebrenica" project because he knows how important it is to nurture a culture of remembrance.

“This is the only way we can prevent "never again" from being just an empty phrase,” Kožemjakin added.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center said that it has never been more important to stand united against any form of historical revisionism, growth of the extreme right, and those policies that relativize the crimes of the Holocaust and genocide in Srebrenica, the Press Service of the Srebrenica Memorial Center announced.
