Turković-Edwards: NATO has key role in preserving peace and security

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 5 (FENA) - Deputy Chairperson of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković spoke today with the Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, Brigadier General William J. Edwards.

Turković praised the achievements of the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo so far, as well as the exceptional engagement, assistance and role of that headquarters in creating a stable and secure Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She reiterated Bosnia and Herzegovina's full commitment to the implementation of program objectives in the areas of responsibility of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the BiH Ministry of Defense, and assessed further assistance and the role of the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo in assisting defense and security sector reform in BiH.

Turković emphasized that fulfilling the set goals and actions from the Reform Program is one of the key priorities of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

They also talked about the process of forming the Commission for the NATO integration process of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In that regard, Turković briefed her interlocutor that the commission had not been established because the BiH MFA, as the proposer, still expects the two ministries to propose the names of potential commission members, followed by vote by the BiH Council of Ministers members.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on the possible marking of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement on December 14 this year, which Turković also discussed with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels in March.

It was mutually assessed that this would be an exceptional opportunity to point out the key role of the NATO military alliance in preserving peace and security, and to review the past and the future of BiH in terms of cooperation with NATO.

Brigadier General Edwards expressed NATO's full commitment to supporting MOBiH and AFBiH in order to further improve its capabilities and partnership with NATO, and to that end, offered his personal and his team's assistance to the competent institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, PR Office of the MFA of BiH announced.
