FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 24 (FENA) - SDA President and Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly Bakir Izetbegović spoke by phone today with EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi about the current political and economic situation in BiH in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the discussion on ways to prevent the consequences caused by the pandemic, Izetbegović emphasized that BiH needs EU assistance in terms of the procurement of medical equipment and medicines. Varhely said the EU is ready to provide additional assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina's precise requirements.

One of the topics referred to illegal migration, which especially burdens BiH, but also the EU. It was said that only in synergistic action both BiH and the EU, but also within the Western Balkans, can this problem be brought under control. In this regard, the EU will develop a special assistance program to the Region that will include Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Izetbegović emphasized that, unfortunately, the problem of illegal migrants is treated exclusively as a Bosniak problem, and that the Una-Sana Canton and the City of Bihać are currently under disproportionate pressure.

The European Commission will soon present its economic and investment plan for the Western Balkans, which aims to provide long-term support for economic recovery and the region's rapprochement with the European Union, Varhelyi said. The focus of the plan will be infrastructure related to the construction of highways and railways, alternative gas supply routes, but also the modernization of the airport, digitalization, and education. On this occasion, Izetbegović especially emphasized the need for urgent construction of the airport in Bihać.

In the end, they discussed Bosnia and Herzegovina's approach to the European Union and said that 14 key priorities from the EC Opinion represent a clear basis, but that in fulfilling them, Izetbegović stressed, a sincerer and more engaged attitude of all actors in BiH is needed, especially RS representatives, it was announced from the SDA.
