Čović holds online meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Varhelyi

SARAJEVO, July 24 (FENA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović held a video call today with EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy (EU) Oliver Varhelyi.

During the meeting, officials discussed the state of the coronavirus pandemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, EU assistance, economic measures, candidate status for EU membership, the migration crisis and other topics.

Officials commented on the current epidemiological and socio-economic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, stressing EU assistance to BiH, which has proved important in protecting against health, social and economic challenges.

Furthermore, they discussed economic measures and a recovery plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans, emphasizing the importance of further cooperation in combating the consequences. It was pointed out that BiH should have a special place in the recovery plan, and that such a place will be provided in the coming period.

The interlocutors stressed the importance of gaining BiH candidate status for EU membership, and that it was necessary to move closer to membership in the European family as soon as possible. Emphasizing the 14 key priorities from the Opinion of the European Commission, satisfaction was expressed with the recently achieved steps, as well as the absolute commitment to meet the priorities that will contribute to further strengthening the European future of BiH. Emphasizing that the local elections in the City of Mostar are one of the key priorities, it was pointed out that the local elections in Mostar must be organized when and in all other local areas in 2020.

Also, the state of migrant inflow was discussed, emphasizing the issues of asylum, security and coordinated cooperation. It was emphasized that the continuous dialogue and cooperation with European bodies are part of the effective response of BiH, with further dialogue and work of BiH institutions.

In the end, Commissioner Varhelyi wished Čović a speedy recovery, the PA BiH Public Relations Office said.
