BiH Agency for Gender Equality publishes second edition of Istanbul Convention

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 18 (FENA) - The Agency for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH recently published the second edition of the Istanbul Convention, with an Explanation, on the occasion of ten years since the adoption of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention) and the tenth anniversary of the first BiH edition of the Convention, the Ministry announced.

The publication will serve as important reference material for authorities, the judiciary, civil society organizations and all entities involved in the process of protection and prevention of gender-based violence.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was among the first member states of the Council of Europe to ratify the Convention, committing itself to legislative and other measures to ensure a legal, institutional and organizational framework for the prevention of violence against women, the protection of victims of violence and the punishment of perpetrators.

Since then, BiH has taken significant political, strategic and operational steps to implement this international legal document.

Holders of responsibility for the implementation of measures from strategic documents and policies are the authorities at the BiH and entity levels, the authorities of the Brčko District of BiH, cantons and local self-government units, in accordance with the competencies established by applicable legislation.

Since the enactment of the entity laws on protection from domestic violence, the process of establishing a protocol on cooperation between the competent institutions on dealing with cases of domestic violence at the local level has been underway in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina still has many tasks ahead in the fight against gender-based violence through the harmonization of legislation, standards and positive practices of protection and prevention, both within BiH and with the standards set by the Istanbul Convention.

These tasks, in all their importance and complexity, are contained in the published publication - Istanbul Convention with Explanation, second edition.

The Agency for Gender Equality of Bosnia and Herzegovina of the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH calls on the competent authorities, the civil sector, citizens, to continue working together to make the results of the implementation of the Convention more visible in everyday life.
