SARAJEVO, August 19 (FENA) - Head of the SDA caucus in the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Adil Osmanović, welcomed the assessment of US Ambassador to BiH Eric Nelson that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to reform the constitution.
“The Dayton Agreement in Bosnia and Herzegovina fulfilled its function in a very good way, because it first stopped the war and further suffering of the population, as well as further destruction of BiH society, and brought sustainable peace to the country. However, if we are talking about the need for Bosnia and Herzegovina to move faster towards the EU and NATO, then it is certainly one of the mechanisms - the reform of the Constitution, which is done by a two-thirds majority in the BiH Parliament (not some entity and district agreements). The United States is one of the witnesses of the Dayton Peace Agreement, and a key driver of initiatives, in cooperation with PIC and the OHR, which have strengthened the state and its institutions in the past decades. In that sense, the increased diplomatic interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina should certainly be welcomed,” said Osmanović.
He added that the transatlantic community of North America and Europe is based on a constitutional framework that recognizes the citizen as the bearer of sovereignty, regardless of skin color, ethnicity or religion.
“That is exactly what Bosnia and Herzegovina needs, a Euro-Atlantic Constitution and a step forward in relation to Dayton. As for the assessment of BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik that he supports the initiative for constitutional reform, but not BiH's Euro-Atlantic path, it is like saying that you want to stand up by continuing to sit. It is an absurd statement, but it still shows that Dodik is very careful, which is good. As for the NATO path of BiH, the only fact is that BiH institutions must fulfill the obligations required by our membership in the MAP, which are the obligations of all of us, including the member of the Presidency from the RS entity,” concluded Adil Osmanović in a press release.
