EU and UN Women working together in BiH to protect women and girls from violence

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 24 (FENA) - The European Union and UN Women in BiH are continuing their mutual work as a part of the regional ending violence against women project „Implementing Norms, Changing Minds“.

As a part of the second phase, the European Union and UN Women are continuing their close cooperation with civil society organizations in BiH that are working with women survivors of violence, providing support to their activities which include sustainable support to safe houses, SOS helplines, and free legal aid aiming at introducing systemic changes in legislation and policies in the area of domestic violence.

Four new contracts signed as a part of the second phase will provide an opportunity to Association “Vive žene” and Association of Roma Women “Better Future” from Tuzla, Foundation “Lara” from Bijeljina, and Foundation for Local Democracy Sarajevo to continue working on raising the level of protection and prevention from domestic violence and violence against women in BiH, building upon previous EU financial assistance.

Activities as a part of these projects will take into consideration the current situation and circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and will try to respond in the best possible way to the needs of those suffering from domestic violence and other forms of gender-based violence.

“Violence against women and girls is, unfortunately, one of the most common and serious human rights violations. A huge obstacle to equality between men and women, gender-based violence has devastating consequences. It persistently controls and minimizes women, girls and their human rights. Together, UN Women, the European Union, the authorities and civil society organizations are working on common standards and adapting laws and policies to the Istanbul Convention to prevent violence and support survivors,” said David Saunders, Representative of UN Women in BiH.

“Continuing work with UN Women in BiH, and with the help of long experience of civil society organizations active in this area, we will use innovative approaches to attitude and behavior change, working on several tracks with the goal to expand protection of victims and advocate for stronger implementation of measures for perpetrators,“ said Gianluca Vannini, Head of Section at EU Delegation in BiH.

The association “Vive žene” will work on influencing attitudes and actions of police officers to better respond to cases of domestic violence which will inevitably improve the protection of victims. In cooperation with Foundation “Lara” and Safe Network (a network of civil society organizations that manage safe houses in BiH), the objective will be to raise capacities of service providers in four cantons in FBiH (Sarajevo, Tuzla, Una-Sana and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton), and three regions in the entity of Republika Srpska (Doboj, Bijeljina and Banja Luka).

The objective of this partnership is to better coordinate their response, inform victims of their rights in an understandable way, and to be better able to assess the safety risks in each case.

In partnership with the association of Roma women “Better Future”, the goal is to work on building trust between marginalized communities and local service providers in Prnjavor, Vukosavlje, Bijeljina and Kakanj, while empowering women to exercise their rights and advocate for the inclusion of their priorities in policy planning processes.

In collaboration with Foundation for Local Democracy, work will continue on advocating for improved legislation and policy framework for protection from domestic violence, including sustainable support to specialist services (safe houses, SOS helplines, psychosocial support), stated the UN Women in BiH.
