Marić: Dodik emerges as a loser from a meeting with Vučić

SARAJEVO, August 28 (FENA) - The BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik emerged as a loser from the last meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, but at least he learned from his numerous defeats to present defeat as a victory, says political analyst Ivana Marić said in an interview with FENA.

At the last meeting of the two in Belgrade on Wednesday, Vučić rejected Dodik's proposal to tie the talks on the status of Kosovo with the status of the BiH entity of Republika Srpska, saying that "Serbia's position is absolute respect for the Dayton Peace Agreement" and that everything should be done “to respect the peace achieved in Dayton and preserves the integrity of the RS in BiH ".

Marić says that the relationship between Dodik and Vučić could be characterized as a complicated one.

“The two of them work closely together, not because they love and appreciate each other, but because they need each other. They agree on many things behind closed doors, in fact, these are not agreements because it is mostly about Vučić giving Dodik instructions for further action. Every time they organize such meetings under the spotlight, it is clear that it is just a show for the masses,” underlines Marić.

She also noted that the motives of these staged plays come as a variety.

“Sometimes their goal is to draw attention from the topics that are important to the public, and which are not good for one or the other. In the past, Dodik would oppose Vučić, but it was also a pre-agreed discord according to which Dodik raises tensions so that Vučić, by calming down Dodik, would present himself as a peacemaker and a factor of stability in the Balkans,” she said.

She emphasized that by playing with the topic of the status of the Republika Srpska, Vučić is trying to take a better negotiating position "in the inevitable process of recognizing Kosovo's independence".

“There were a couple of situations in which Dodik was really disobedient, but Vučić quickly and efficiently returned him to his place with the obligatory degradation, after which Dodik had to work even harder to gain Vučić's affection. The proof for the problems in their relations is seen in the fact that Vučić’s recent official meeting with Branislav Borenović, the president of the PDP, was spoken about in the media across the board. Vučić had met with the presidents of other political parties in the RS before, but it was always barely reported in the media. Perhaps Vučić wanted to send a message to Dodik that he was not irreplaceable,” said Marić.

However, she believes that this latest Dodik’s offensive against Vučić was a little different from the previous ones, which were more the result of recklessness than a careful plan.

“This time it was not a hasty decision, but a planned provocation and a sharp and explicit request sent to Vučić. Therefore, the question arises as to where Dodik got his sudden courage. Maybe in the meantime, he worked on himself or found a mentor stronger than Vučić, but he forgot that Vučić is still a stronger political player than him. Vučić showed that at the meeting of the delegations of Serbia and the entity of Republika Srpska in Belgrade. Dodik came to Vučić with a request that Serbia treats Kosovo and the RS in the same manner, but Vučić coldly rejected him and reiterated his earlier views that Serbia absolutely respects the Dayton Peace Agreement and that preserving peace and stability are essential for Serbia. Vučić thus clearly showed him that he had no intention of spoiling his relations with the West because of him.

Dodik came out as a loser this time as well, but at least he learned from his numerous defeats to present the defeat as a victory. Vučić helped him in that, so they both came out as winners and saviors of all Serbs. They have been on the political scene long enough, so they know that there is no conflict that the citizens would not forget if you threaten them with an enemy, even if it was an imaginary one. And this time as well, it was a case of a storm in a teacup, that these two once again explain to their citizens that they allegedly saved Serbia and the Republika Srpska from war, but do not say who declared war on them, when and why,” explains Marić.

Whether this is a staged or real conflict between Dodik and Vučić, we shall see in the coming elections.

“If Vučić provides exclusive support to Dodik, it will mean that the conflict is a fake one, but if this time he chooses to remain neutral and leave the decision in the elections to the Serb people in BiH, it will be a clear message to Dodik to think twice before going against a player stronger than himself,” concluded Marić in an interview with FENA.
