SARAJEVO, August 28 (FENA) - The Institute for Missing Persons of BiH announced today at a press conference in Sarajevo, on the occasion of the upcoming International Day of the Disappeared, which is marked on August 30, that there are still 7,547 registered missing persons of BiH.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Missing Persons of BiH, Amor Mašović, specified that there were 34,965 reported missing persons in the central register of missing persons of BiH at the time it was published and that the Verification Commission has processed 30,624 reports so far, and another 4,341 are being processed.
“Out of the processed number, 28,320 were verified and these are indisputably persons who went missing in the period from April 30, 1991, to February 14, 1996, and another 1,543 reports are in the process of verification,” said Mašović.
He added that 761 people were deleted from the records because they cannot have the status by definition of the Law on Missing Persons.
“Out of 28,320 verified reports, 14,749 were identified under the DNA method and were handed over to the families, while 6,024 were identified through the regular method,” Mašović pointed out.
Head of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) program for the Western Balkans, Matthew Holliday, asked the families of the missing who have not yet given blood samples for DNA analysis to contact ICMP and provide samples for identification.
Once again, an appeal was extended to all those who have any information about mass or individual graves to report them to the authorities, in person or anonymously, because they will be paid for such information.
An online campaign of the International Committee of the Red Cross was also announced entitled "Where are they?” which begins on Sunday, August 30, on the International Day of the Disappeared.
