US State Department special envoy Matthew Palmer to visit Sarajevo

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 7 (FENA) - The US State Department Special Envoy for the Balkans and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer is visiting Sarajevo, 'Dnevni avaz' has reported.

Palmer will arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Brussels, where he has held talks with European officials, but also with regional politicians such as Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

As it was confirmed to Dnevni avaz from several sources, Palmer will have several important political meetings in Sarajevo, including talks with political leaders and members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On Wednesday, Trump's special envoy will meet with three prime ministers: Zoran Tegeltija, Chairman of the BiH Council of Ministers, Fadil Novalić, Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH, and Radovan Višković, Prime Minister of the entity of Republika Srpska.

In addition, Palmer is expected to have a number of meetings with key political stakeholders, especially after significant events have happened in the region. This is especially true of the historic agreement signed in the White House between Serbian President Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdulah Hoti.

The position of the United States is well-known, that there is no connection between the situation in BiH and the status of Kosovo, but that does not mean that the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina does not contribute to the stabilization of the whole region.

Palmer is a key interlocutor from Washington for the BiH political scene and his visit means the continuation of an active US policy to support reforms and the country's progress on the European path and the path to membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Also, Palmer is expected to discuss economic issues with BiH authorities, in particular the fight against the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Also, it is not excluded that constitutional changes will also be one of the topics, considering that we are nearing exactly 25 years since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, Dnevni avaz reports.
