Osavszky: BiH must start preparatory activities for procurement of vaccine

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 11 (FENA) - A delegation of the World Health Organization visited the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and discussed several topics, the most important of which was Covid-19.

The delegation of the World Health Organization included: Head of the WHO office for BiH, Dr. Victor Olsavszky, Special Adviser to the Director of the WHO European Region dr. Fabio Scano, expert in the field of providing essential health services (WHO Regional Office for Europe) dr. Ardita Tahirukaj and crisis communication expert Martha Scherzer.

Dr. Scano pointed out that it is important to go through the pandemic together, and that it will not be over for a long time. This fact implies a change of approach, which means that all available experiences should be taken into account, adapted and applied, announced the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH.

BiH's accession to the Gavi Alliance for the procurement of vaccines for BiH residents was also discussed.

Dr. Osavszky stressed that it is very important for Bosnia and Herzegovina to start preparatory activities for the procurement of the vaccine. At the same time, the important role of the Ministry of Civil Affairs in uniting all the needs expressed by the entities and the Brčko District was emphasized, and the presentation of these needs through one joint document.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs stated that WHO officials emphasized that testing should be intensified, that a much larger number of residents should be included, and that the competent services must be ahead of the virus.

They added that the competent institutions must find a mechanism to predict what will be and what the movement of the virus will be, in order to be able to create different scenarios for the fight against the virus.

As an example of good practice, which is still lacking in BiH, "contact monitoring" is cited, which in BiH is mainly based on one contact with which the infected person was, while in other countries it is about monitoring five to fifteen contacts.

At the end of the visit, dr. Olsavszky gave his support to BiH's participation in the 70th virtual session of the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization, which will be held on September 14, 2020, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH announced.
