Čović and Sattler speak about local elections and the EU path of BiH

SARAJEVO, September 16 (FENA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović talked today with the Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH, Ambassador Johann Sattler about the current political situation in BiH, local elections and the European path of our country.

The two also referred to the epidemiological situation and cooperation with the EU in overcoming the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

In light of marking September 15, International Democracy Day, Čović stressed the importance of working to build a democratically developed BiH, respecting democracy as a commitment of the people and one of the fundamental principles of the EU.

He added that the future of European BiH "must include full respect for the principles of equality and the legitimate representation of the constituent peoples, contributing to the long-term stabilization of political relations, socio-economic development and regional stability."

In the conversation about the upcoming local elections, the two expressed satisfaction with the recent progress. Čović conveyed the position of Croat political officials on the indivisibility of the election process and a new case of discrimination of the City of Mostar, emphasizing that increasing the turnout of young people and achieving active participation of young people in the political processes of BiH is a priority.

He stressed that "amendments to the Election Law are necessary for a stable European future of BiH, which must fully protect the equality and legitimate representation of all constituent peoples."

Sattler spoke about the importance of cooperation of all stakeholders in Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to achieve the priorities set by the Opinion of the European Commission on BiH's application for EU membership.

He emphasized the importance of adopting a revised State Strategy for War Crimes and the new Law on Conflict of Interest, as well as amendments to the Law on Public Procurement and the Law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council, and urgently addressing the functionality of the wastewater treatment plant in Mostar. 

He also stressed that the EU continues to support BiH in the fight against the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, including support for socio-economic recovery, stated the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH.
