Izetbegović: Bosniaks have become indispensable political and military factor

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, September 17 (FENA) - Bosniaks have become a political and military factor without which there is no more calculation in BiH or in the Balkans, and that would not be the case without SDA, said Bakir Izetbegović in his address last night in Mostar, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the City Board of SDA Mostar.

“I congratulate you on 30 years of existence and activities of the SDA Mostar City Board - 30 years of persistent political and military struggle for the survival and equality of our people and our homeland, for freedom, democracy and prosperity of our society, as well as for the defense, recovery and prosperity of Mostar - one of the most beautiful cities," said SDA President.

“The patriots of Bosnia and Herzegovina went through hard times, it was not easy for anyone, but it was twice as difficult for the people of Mostar and Bosniaks in this part of Herzegovina. We are proud of you and everything you have endured and achieved,” said Izetbegović.

He recalled the events in Mostar 30 years ago, on September 16, 1990, when the first SDA rally was held at Velež Stadium.

“I remember the actors, parts of the speech of the late Alija Izetbegović. It was clear that we were approaching fateful historical temptations. And then we remember every year that followed - 1991 and the JNA reservists who harassed Mostar and Herzegovina, 1992 and Perišić's bombing of the city, crimes in Zalik, 1993 and attacks by the HVO, Vranići, Dretelj, the demolition of Stolac, Mostar. The most difficult moment of the war, the most depressing point for all of us, not just for the people of Mostar, was November 9, 1993 when the Mostar Old Bridge was torn down. More precisely - when the Old Bridge was killed,” he said.

SDA President further recalled the Washington Accords, the attacks that continued, the attacks on Hans Koschnick and representatives of the international community.

“We remember everything, we will not forget anything, but we will not allow hatred to overwhelm us, to remain slaves of the past. That is why we will gladly remember the renovation of the Old Bridge, the Old Town, the renovation of the Orthodox Church, and the renovation of the Ruža Hotel. I am proud that we from the SDA were part of all that. On the way to this place, I stopped by the construction site of a large mosque in Zalik. Congratulations on this construction and financial effort. New mosques are being built throughout BiH, and almost all the old ones, which were destroyed in the last war, have been rebuilt. And this is the first time in the last 150 years, when the attacks on Bosniaks began. For the first time, we are returning to the places from which we were expelled, and for the first time, the destroyed mosques are being renovated,” said Izetbegović.

That is so, he emphasized, because Bosniaks have become a political and military factor without which there is no more calculation in BiH or in the Balkans, "and that would not have happened without SDA."

He said that for 30 years, forgiveness and goodness have been "our political philosophy".

Izetbegović announced that this will be SDA's approach and motto for the local elections this year.

“Mostar has the local elections for the first time in 12 years. We are not going with the slogan AGAINST, but with the slogan FOR! For a reconciled Mostar, for Mostar which is a combination of tradition and modernity, for a clean and tidy Mostar, for a city that will be a champion in tourism, which will guarantee its inhabitants employment, rich cultural life and a clear perspective. For European Mostar! We will all be with you in December. You have done an excellent job so far, and we from the top of the SDA have helped, Dr. Zvizdić in particular. Congratulations to Marić and Špago on the broad coalition they gathered - it took a lot of intelligence and strength to first defeat oneself in order to create unity in such circumstances. That victory will, God willing, bring the one in December! We have always been with you, and always will be. And there will always be room for representatives of Herzegovina, both in the SDA and in the government,” said Bakir Izetbegović.
