Čović: I am not optimistic when it comes to forming new FBiH Government

MOSTAR, September 21 (FENA) - Presidency of the Croat National Assembly (HNS) of BiH held a session today at which key topics were activities related to the 2020 local elections in BiH, as well as the current political situation in the country.

President of HDZ BiH and HNS BiH, Dragan Čović, said that the lists for Mostar were submitted today.

“Our expectations are to get more municipal mayors as well as town mayors in areas where Croats are more numerous as people and more councilors and municipal or city councils than we have had so far, in the entire area of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We believe that this is realistic,” Čović pointed out.

He added that the HNS once again expressed regret that the BiH Central Election Commission (CEC) had separated Mostar by deciding to hold local elections in Mostar a month later than the rest of the country.

“The agreement signed in Mostar, which concerns Mostar, had its second dimension around the Election Law and precisely defined that we, HDZ and SDA, adhering to those dates from September 17 to December 17, will agree on the elements of the Election Law in order to address the issue of legitimate representation. Mr. Izetbegović's comment after our talks pointed to some completely different considerations and we are concerned about the level of attitude towards the signed agreement,” said the President of the HDZ BiH.

According to him, the negation of the constituency of the people in Bosnia and Herzegovina is unacceptable.

“While we have such a constitution, in that way we need to show our patriotism and ensure that Bosnia and Herzegovina functions. When it comes to the announcement that the Sejdić or Komšić phenomenon will also happen at the lower levels in order to completely eliminate the constituency of the Croat people, this will be unacceptable for us. We must ensure the legitimate representation of the Croat people at all levels of government, that is the beginning and the end,” said Čović.

In that regard, Čović stated that he is not optimistic when it comes to forming a new government of the Federation of BiH.

“We have a very clear position from the beginning when it comes to the FBiH Government. That attitude is exactly the same today and I conveyed it to my colleague Izetbegović, and told him that the moment when we make a clear partnership based on the principles we want from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the long run, the government can be formed in 24 hours. But considering that we are far from an agreement, I am not optimistic about the formation of new FBiH Government,” said Čović.

When it comes to the visit of BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik to Zagreb, Čović pointed out that the visit was very useful.

“The Republic of Croatia is a significant partner of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the fact is that in time ahead we will have a lot of similar meetings at different levels and I think that can greatly help BiH. I do not see any reason why the dominant leader of the Serb people in BiH would not meet with anyone in the world and I absolutely gave my support to that meeting,” Čović stated.
