Turković asks IAEA to support construction of radiotherapy centers in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 23 (FENA) - Deputy Chairperson of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković talked with Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi in Vienna.

She expressed support for the ZODIAC (Zoonotic Disease Integrated Action) project, launched in June 2020, to help countries prevent epidemics caused by bacteria, parasites, fungi or viruses that originate from animals and can be transmitted to humans.

She also said that she expects Bosnia and Herzegovina to become a member of the IAEA Board in 2022. She expressed gratitude for the testing kits for COVID-19, which they delivered to clinical centers in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, and asked for the support of the IAEA for the construction of radiotherapy centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She reminded the General Director of the issue of Trgovska gora. Although BiH is aware of the IAEA's position on non-interference in bilateral relations, she said that she would especially appreciate it if the IAEA provided assistance in setting standards for conducting this process.

Director-General Grossi said that the IAEA is ready to continue cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina and strengthen existing relations, adding that the International Atomic Energy Agency will provide instruments for radiotherapy as well as an exchange of knowledge and experience.

When it comes to Trgovska Gora, he stressed that security standards exist and the IAEA can offer professional involvement in hearings and understanding of concerns, and then can offer technical solutions and professional assistance.

It is stated that the IAEA cannot offer mediation, but that it can offer to talk to both parties so that both of them understand the overall circumstances. Technical dialogue would be desirable and the IAEA supports both sides to get involved in the process, in order to reach conclusions, the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
