Negative consequences of COVID-19 pandemic are most obvious in school system

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 13 - (FENA) - World Vision BiH, on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, reminds of the inadequate readiness of the school system for crisis management and appeals to all competent state, entity, cantonal and municipal institutions, NGOs and others to engage in school safety improvement activities.

In a press release, World Vision BiH states that the challenge that society faced during the crisis caused by the coronavirus is most obvious in the school system. In addition to the difficulties that combined teaching brought to children and parents, school administrations faced a lack of adequate tools and protocols for handling and conducting classes during a pandemic.

The specifics of the education system and insufficient preparedness for crisis situations have led to uneven conditions in which children began attending classes in September.

“In cooperation with local communities, World Vision BiH has been working for years on risk assessment and planning an adequate response to natural and other disasters, including epidemics. During September, we witnessed numerous appeals from school administrations to create unique protocols for attending classes, but also urgent requests for the purchase of disinfectants for schools,” said Sveto Đurđević, expert advisor for economic empowerment and development at World Vision BiH.

The findings of research on safety and readiness of schools to respond to natural and other disasters conducted by World Vision in 2018 in primary and secondary schools in the Federation of BiH and Brčko District, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, gain additional importance and indicate the need for urgent planned action. According to the research, children and teaching staff face risks directly during their stay in school; only 10 percent of schools have developed protection and rescue plans in case of a natural and other disaster.

COVID-19 deepened the issue and further pointed out the importance of urgently creating action plans in natural disaster situations.
