SARAJEVO, October 13 (FENA) - The beauty of rivers is something we should leave to future generations, it was said today after a meeting of representatives of the Government of the Federation of BiH and the River Rescue Association, whose focus was on the harmful consequences of building small hydropower plants, with reference to the Declaration on the Protection of Rivers adopted this year by the House of Representatives of the FBiH Parliament.

Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH, Fadil Novalić, said that a significant meeting was held today, which is in line with the beginning of solving a significant social problem. He reminded that the ultimate goal of the strategy on renewable energy sources is less pollution.

“Citizens and their associations have noticed the problem related to SHPPs. Our nature and mountains are attacked, and there is no benefit in the obtained electricity and is exclusively distributed to a small number of private owners,” Novalić pointed out.

He emphasized that technology has significantly advanced and that it is no longer rational to build SHPPs, taking into account the development of wind farms and solar energy systems.

Novalić stated that after a constructive conversation with the representatives of the association, they came to the conclusion that the approach on the way to ban the construction of SHPPs is changing.

“We as a government need to see what we can do before the parliament in terms of certain rules or possibly regulations. It is necessary to change the fact that we do not support what is socially harmful, and that is SHPPs, and that we systematically change the legislation,” Novalić added.

FBiH Minister of Environment and Tourism Edita Djapo added that they had meetings with representatives of these non-governmental organizations before, and that they still proposed certain changes to the regulations to help solve this problem.

“It is extremely important to say that SHPPs change the lives of communities, especially the local population that lives near rivers, and disrupts rural development, as well as tourist potentials,” said Djapo.

On behalf of the River Rescue Association, Lejla Kusturica, Director of the Atelier for Community Transformation, said that the participants in today's meeting agreed that the construction of SHPPs is harmful and that it is necessary to make a turn in the approach and ban such projects.

In addition to Prime Minister Novalić and Minister Djapo, Minister of Physical Planning Josip Martić, representatives of the FBiH Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry and the FBiH Ministry of Energy, Mining and Industry also attended the meeting with representatives of the River Rescue Association.
