The problems of blind persons are almost inconceivable to those who can see

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 14 (FENA) - On the occasion of marking October 15, International White Cane Safety Day, the Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ljubinko Mitrović, Jasminka Džumhur and Nives Jukić call on the competent authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to act, adopt specific policies and strategic documents with clearly defined goals and allocated financial resources, contribute to the improvement of the position of blind and sight-impaired persons in society and the community.

The unsatisfactory position of blind persons is most often the result of various forms of discrimination, stigmatization, inability to find employment, as well as difficult access to assistance.

The everyday problems of blind and sight-impaired persons are almost inconceivable to people who see, and the most common problems relate to structural barriers and inadequately marked terrain for the movement of blind persons. This is why blind persons need constant accompaniment from the people they see.

The fact is that in a world full of cars and heavy traffic, the white cane is an aid that allows the blind to move independently in familiar terrain, and is also a trademark symbol of blind persons.

International White Cane Safety Day, October 15, is marked around the world with the aim of raising public awareness of the specific needs of blind and partially sight-impaired people, but also the obligations of the community towards them.
