SARAJEVO, October 15 (FENA) - President of the Central Election Commission of BiH (CEC BiH) Željko Bakalar announced at a press conference today that the official pre-election campaign begins tomorrow and will last until the day of election silence, November 14 this year.

There are 543 political entities participating in the upcoming local elections, scheduled for Sunday, November 15. Elections have been called for 64 municipal councils in the FBiH, 56 municipal assemblies in the RS, 120 municipal mayors in BiH, 14 city councils in the FBiH, seven city assemblies in the RS, 22 city mayors in BiH, and members of the BiH Brčko District Assembly.

“The novelty is that the mayor of East Sarajevo will be directly elected, which means that voters in the municipalities of the East Sarajevo will receive a third ballot, i.e. they will vote for members of municipal assemblies, municipal mayors and the mayor of East Sarajevo,” Bakalar added.

As he said, 543 political entities are participating in the local elections, namely 129 political parties, 262 independent candidates, 72 coalitions, nine lists of independent candidates and 71 independent candidates belonging to national minorities.

“A total of 30.809 candidates have been verified for the 2020 local elections. 3,283.194 people are registered in the Central Voters' Register,” Bakalar added.

As he pointed out, this campaign is special because it is held during the pandemic, and it is necessary that all participants in the election process adhere to the epidemiological measures in force.

Bakalar called on all political entities and other participants in the election process to use the election campaign in a fair way.

When it comes to financing the election campaign, Bakalar stated that the maximum allowed amount for financing expenses is obtained by multiplying the number of voters in the constituency in which political entities are registered in the elections by 30 pfennigs.

Bakalar emphasized that the CEC will receive evidence of attempted election fraud until the results are confirmed and forwarded to the competent prosecutor's offices.

BiH CEC member Suad Arnautović promoted an online course for the widest circle of polling station committee members, election observers, the media and voters. The course is free and is available on the website obuke.izbori.ba.

He emphasized that this novelty is important primarily because of its accessibility to the general public, but also in terms of respect for epidemiological measures.
