Džaferović: Let us stay committed to studying the legacy of Alija Izetbegović

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 19 (FENA) - Alija Izetbegović has left an indelible mark in various fields of human activity. He was a statesman, a writer, a humanist, a thinker, and above all, he was a good man. With his lavish wisdom, as a true thinker, he knew how to grasp the secrets of the human heart, and with his unique charisma, as a true leader, he knew how to win souls, direct them and move them into action, always striving for good, said the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of Alija Izetbegović, the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Alija Izetbegović did not think that his life was given to him to deal only with personal goals and aspirations. He always thought through the prism of the community, its challenges, interests and dilemmas. As a Bosniak, a Muslim, he was interested not only in where his people were going but also the direction they should take. He never reconciled with the existing situation.

He was an intellectual, committed to the values of the modern world - freedom, democracy, education and science, but always aware of his Muslim and Bosniak identity.

As the first democratically elected President of the Presidency, he led Bosnia and Herzegovina on the path to the restoration of its independence and then stood steadfastly at the head of a state that found itself under double-sided aggression. He often emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina is not just a piece of land, but the idea that people of different religions and ethnicities can live together. He firmly believed in that, as do all of us who have Bosnia and Herzegovina in their hearts.

Today, as we mark the 17th anniversary of his death, we witness that his works, thoughts and ideas are remembered and studied in both the East and the West.

Let this anniversary be a reminder to stay committed to the study of Alija Izetbegović's work, as well as his entire legacy," said Džaferović in his statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović.
