Sweden/USAID FARMA II - BiH is taking the first steps towards cyber beekeeping

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, October 19 (FENA) - Sweden/USAID FARMA II project supports the training of beekeepers on the use of electronic beekeeping diaries and other innovative ICT solutions to make honey production in BiH more efficient.

The owner of the company "Košnica" from Gradiška, which produces honey and beekeeping equipment and raw materials, and professor at the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Banja Luka, Goran Mirjanić says that it is very important for beekeepers in BiH to accept the idea that science and scientists have a vision that could help them make beekeeping less demanding and more profitable. All these, he added, are the advantages of cyber beekeeping that have yet to be implemented in BiH.

He and three other experts, with the support of the Sweden/USAID FARMA II project, are currently conducting training for beekeepers. At the trainings, they present an electronic beekeeping diary, the first locally produced online application for beekeepers and additional ICT solutions that are currently in use in more developed countries.

"That is why, through our training, we present the progress of beekeeping practices. We start from the most primitive form of beekeeping so that now we can deal with the cyber beekeeping. While doing that, we are also talking about the health of swarms and hives, increasing the yield and quality of honey, and of course, the financial implications of such development and higher profits," Mirjanić explained, adding that in the EU. beekeeping profits increased by 20 to 30 percent due to ICT technologies.

Mirjanić and his colleagues are currently holding a total of twelve webinars for beekeepers' associations from Gradiška, Prijedor, Bihać, Živinice, Brčko, Bijeljina, Banja Luka, Livno, Doboj, Sarajevo, Mostar and Trebinje.

"Beekeepers are not used to this type of training, so we may have a much smaller response. Nevertheless, we still have a large geographical coverage and we will instill the idea of using ICT solutions in a critical number of beekeepers who show a tendency towards such a trend by participating in webinars. I hope that we will be able to develop additional domestic apps that will make our beekeeping more competitive and profitable for all beekeepers," said Mirjanić, announced the Sweden/USAID FARMA II team.
