SARAJEVO, October 20 (FENA) - A solemn academy was held last night at the Sarajevo City Hall to mark the 17th anniversary of the death of the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović.

The high patron of the academy was the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović.

Since Džaferović is currently in isolation, his letter s was read to the guests, in which he emphasized Izetbegović's qualities as a statesman, writer, thinker, humanist, a fighter for human rights and values.

Džaferović characterized Izetbegović as a man of unique charisma with which he won souls and did not think that his life was given only to deal with personal goals and interests, but always thought about the status and interests of the community.

As the first democratically elected President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he stood steadfastly at the head of a state that came under aggression.

Džaferović pointed out that Izetbegović always stood for the idea that people of different religions and ethnicities can live together, which he firmly believed in.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has always been at the center of Izetbegović's idea, Džaferović emphasized in the letter.

On the occasion of the anniversary of Izetbegović's death, this academy, due to epidemiological measures, was held in the presence of a limited number of guests from the political, religious, cultural and academic life of Bosnia and Herzegovina and members of the diplomatic corps.

The exhibition was also opened about Izetbegović's character and work at the City Hall as a unique exhibition of documents, photographs and personal items from the private archives of Izetbegović's family and the Museum in Sarajevo named after him, founded on the fourth anniversary of Izetbegović's death.

This museum is also the organizer of this exhibition in cooperation with the Alija Izetbegović Foundation.

As the first democratically elected President of the Presidency of the Republic of BiH, Izetbegović introduced BiH into the community of independent countries and was the supreme commander of its armed forces, but he did more than that - he tried to build Bosnia and Herzegovina and preserve it in its essence.

Alija Izetbegović, the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who was at the helm of the country in its extremely difficult historical period, was born on August 8, 1925, in Bosanski Šamac in a prominent Bey family originally from Belgrade, which settled in northern Bosnia, after the emigration of Bosniaks from that region.

When he was three years old, his father Mustafa decided to move the family to Sarajevo, where Alija would spend most of his life.

He died in Sarajevo on October 19, 2003.

Bosniaks of all age groups, Bosnians and Herzegovinians of all religious, ethnic and party affiliations, as well as admirers from around the world, paid tribute to him at the funeral in an impressive gathering in Sarajevo, where he was buried, at his own request, at the Kovači Martyrs' Cemetery.
