Handbook on combating violence against LGBTI people promoted

FENA Press release

KONJIC, October 22 (FENA) - The Handbook for Police Officers in the Cases of Violence against LGBTI persons, developed within the project "Protecting Human Rights: Strengthening the Capacity of Police to Combat Violence against LGBTI Persons", was promoted today in Konjic.

The Association "Network of Police Officers" with the support of the US Embassy realized the promotion.

The development of the Handbook was preceded by two trainings for police officers on the topic "Investigating hate crimes", which was attended by 80 officers from all over BiH, announced the Association "Network of Police Officers".

At today's promotion, the authors of the Handbook spoke about its importance for the work of police, emphasizing the need to increase the sensitivity of the police in working with LGBTI persons, recognizing and timely investigating and proving hate crimes.

In the introductory speech, it was emphasized that BiH is characterized by a high degree of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, the cause of which is mostly ignorance, which is why LGBTI persons are exposed to constant discrimination and threats to basic human rights.

Since hate crimes tend to escalate, timely and adequate police response is very important. It is especially stated that the police is a service for all citizens and that authorized officials must act professionally in each specific case without showing prejudice against anyone.

The Handbook will be distributed to all police agencies in BiH.
